A weekend mailing claiming state House candidate Daniel A. Eaton, D-Stoddard, hasn’t paid property taxes since 2002 is false, Eaton said.
The mailing, which arrived in mailboxes Friday and Saturday, was paid for by a political action committee called Concerned Cheshire Citizens.
One side of the mailing asks “Is Dan Eaton laughing at you?”
Below, it says that Eaton has “voted to raise your property taxes more than a dozen times” without paying any himself.
His property taxes are not an issue because he does not own property, Eaton said.
The mailing also claims Eaton is making Stoddard a donor town by voting to “make his friends and neighbors pay an additional $60,000 to fund schools in other towns.”
Eaton called that accusation an outright lie, saying he sponsored an amendment to eliminate donor towns for two years until an education funding formula can be finalized.
In its political committee registration, filed on Oct. 9 with the secretary of state’s office, the Concerned Cheshire Citizens lists its address as 307 South St. in Walpole.
The chairman and treasurer is listed as Dean Howard. But the listed phone number for the committee is the Howard Dean Education Center, which offers a variety of education programs, and is located at 307 South St. in Springfield, Vt.
The purpose of the committee, according to its filing, is to “help inform voters about candidates and issues.”
Eaton said the committee’s registration fee was paid for by a money order, and therefore there is no way to trace the person who created it.
Eaton said he plans to contact the state attorney general’s office about the issue.
