MONTPELIER, Vt. — Brattleboro Town Clerk Annette Cappy doesn’t know what to expect at the polls today. but if early voting is any indication, it will be busy.
“We have had record numbers of people already voting,” she said Monday. “I expect we’ll have some lines, hopefully they won’t be too long.”
Across the state, Vermonters have been turning out in droves to vote early, driven by excitement over the presidential election, said Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz.
“Turnout is really strong. We’re already hearing from some clerks that 25 percent of their checklists voted early, which is a huge, huge number of early voters,” she said.
Combined with Election Day, she predicts an overall turnout of 70 percent, compared to the 60 percent typical in Vermont for a presidential election.
Brattleboro has made some adjustments to the polling place so the process moves faster.
Voters now have access to the 84 voting booths, no matter which of the three districts they’re in, said Cappy. And the three districts now each have five voting tabulating machines instead of one, she said.
